If you are at a point in your life where you want to create good habits for yourself, you are probably feeling a sense of motivation, but get discouraged by the road ahead. You want to change yourself for the better but you feel like you are constantly failing at it. Habits take time, and no change is ever linear.
Here are some tips on how to create good habits
1. Remind yourself that no growth is easy
Many times we romanticize growth and change to be a beautiful transition in life. We see other people or media portray growth as a beautiful journey but we tend to leave out the parts of struggle. Remember that growth is not easy. It is not linear. You will have hard days and you will have days where you feel on top of the world. It will be a crazy ride for a while until it begins to stabilize itself into a habit.
2. Replace habits
When trying to get rid of a habit, we tend to just stop. But it is difficult to just stop something. Actively breaking a habit means to replace it with some other activity. Maybe instead of drinking, you want to create healthier habits, and start drinking more water and smoothies instead. Or maybe you want to stop hanging out with a certain friend group, take up a hobby or join a community center instead!
This will make breaking habits a lot more maintainable because you are replacing the bad habit with something healthier.
3. Make achievable goals
If your goals are too far out of reach, you may feel hopeless at a certain point and feel as though the goals are really not realistic for you. Maybe you feel like they are too out of reach that you can just procrastinate until you feel ready for the challenge.
Achievable goals will help you with small steps. Any steps are good steps and should be celebrated. Take those tiny steps. Those are huge achievements. And every new step you take, make yourself a new goal.
4. Be patient with yourself
Breaking a habit can take from 18 days to almost one whole year. It is not going to be easy, and some days you may want to break. Some days you may have already broken, but it is not a failure. Just get back up and keep going. It is a hard thing to do, and it has never been easy for anyone. You are making difficult moves that show how strong you are. Be patient and be proud of yourself for how far you have come.
