How to Set Healthy Boundaries in the Workplace

It is 2022, we have seen the Great Resignation happen. If you do not know what the Great Resignation is, it is basically many people in the workplace quitting because they would rather be treated well, then have a job at all.


It truly is time that we set healthy workplace boundaries, and if not, we need to be leaving because there are many jobs out there that we can apply for.


Here are some boundaries you should set in place for the workplace:


1. Make sure that your time is taken into consideration.


If you have told your workplace how many hours you are able to work and when, and they try to schedule you when you clearly are not available, leave the job. They don’t respect your time, and they will keep doing it. If they give you overtime work that was not agreed upon (even if you have salary) that means they are not respecting your work boundaries. They will keep doing it the more that you make exceptions for them.


2. Make sure that your break is respected.

If your workplace does not respect your break by the minute, this may not be the job for you. Maintain your boundaries and let them know that you will work when your break is over. If you do work on your break, make sure you are being paid for it.


3. Make sure that you are respected.

Make sure your co-workers treat you well. This does not mean catering to you, but it does mean to be polite and respectful as you communicate with each other. If your supervisor is not being respectful when speaking to you, you may need to re-evaluate your time there.


4. Make sure that the job pay matches the work that is expected.

If you are working seven dollars an hour for a job that has you doing ten tasks and managing people, you are not being paid for the amount of effort you put in this job and may need to consider going to a job that values and will pay for your time appropriately.


5. Make sure that nobody is trying to guilt you.

If your co-worker or supervisor is trying to guilt you into filling up job titles that you are not being paid for, you may need to leave. You should never be guilted into a position without the proper pay. At that point, they are taking advantage of you.

At the end of the day, most workplaces do not care about you. Either find one that does, or find one that pays you respectively according to the work you put in. Maintain your boundaries. Your time is valuable, and you should not be taken advantage at work. There are many other places you can work out there.
